interesting point of departure for tinkering with representations of population - what does it look like normalized & rank ordered, ratio pop to habitable land (rather than total) or compared to energy, water, other resources, etc?
Kristen Stewart in Brazil yesterday
This outfit is adorable, I love every single thing about it.
I have a real problem with Kristen Stewart wearing a picture of a handgun in Brazil (or anywhere frankly). This is a country with a HUGE violence problem, and this is a young celebrity who kids look up to. With a picture of a gun. Yeah, what’s not to like?
I am sick and tired of glorifying these ridiculous celebrities who have no conception of the impact they have on society.
FAIL
Seriously?
Yes seriously. The United States is first in the world with gun-related deaths per 100,000 people (14.24). Brazil is second (12.95).
Maybe she can wear a shirt with…I don’t know…ANYTHING else on it.
I would be shocked — shocked — if her selection of attire led to a single incremental gun-related death. Shocked. Worry about something else.
Ok. I don’t know who this is, and clearly, she’s not in Brazil, but that aside: the img is of a revolver - clearly you’re objecting to the six shooter as a graphical shorthand for the notion of Manifest Destiny? Because it inappropriately celebrates oppression / violence during westward expansion? Likewise, I think we should all wear a drawing of an acoustic coupler to promote high-speed internet access penetration around the world.
PS. None of you play first-person shooter games, either, right?

Mayor of London saves woman from street attack… while riding his bike.
“Boris Johnson rescued a woman from three “feral kids” who were wielding an iron bar, chasing them away on his bicycle, it emerged tonight. The mayor of London was cycling through Camden, north London, on Monday night when he answered the cry of Franny Armstrong, a documentary maker and environmental activist who was surrounded by a group of hoodie-clad young girls. Johnson stopped and chased the girls down the street, calling them “oiks”. He then returned to walk Armstrong home. “He was my knight on a shining bicycle,” she said today.”
BORIS = BETTER THAN BLOOMBERG
I’m sure Bloomberg’s presence on the subways has deterred at least one or two of our own “oiks” from peeing off the platform? (Does he really commute by subway?)
When the sea returns to Aralsk,” he said, “I will write a symphony and get an orchestra to play it by the shore.

But women need to take risks — and to realize that at some point they will fail. This is an incredibly hard thing to do, especially for women brought up in a culture that celebrates unrealistic perfection in every sphere, from beauty to housekeeping.
Noah, bogged down with ever-more-grandiose plans for luxury suites aboard the Ark, fails to launch on time and manages to save only one breeding pair of chinchillas and two post-menopausal ladies from the Land of Nod.
But in its own study last year of 121 new buildings certified through 2006, the Green Building Council found that more than half — 53 percent — did not qualify for the Energy Star label and 15 percent scored below 30 in that program, meaning they used more energy per square foot than at least 70 percent of comparable buildings in the existing national stock.

Whoa - didn’t realize it was THAT bad. Fer shame, folks.
The plaque should be installed with removable screws,” said Henry Gifford, an energy consultant in New York City. “Once the plaque is glued on, there’s no incentive to do better.
It has LEED certification, the country’s most recognized seal of approval for green buildings. But the building is hardly a model of energy efficiency. According to an environmental assessment last year, it did not score high enough to qualify for the Energy Star label granted by the Environmental Protection Agency, which ranks buildings after looking at a year’s worth of utility bills.
